Environmental and Social Programs

EXMAM seeks to make a contribution to the improvement of social and environmental conditions in our local community. Three programs are designed to achieve these goals:

Local School Construction and Ongoing Support

Working with a local social entrepreneur, EXMAM underwrote the costs of the construction of a school in a disadvantaged part of the city of Marituba. The school offers elementary education to more than 300 children who previously were not served by the public schools. EXMAM continues to support ongoing financial needs of the school, together with the participation of the municipal school system.

Reforestation Project

EXMAM has implemented a 302 hectare ecological reforestation project through its subsidiary Restauração Florestal (Restoration Forestry). The project replants cleared and degraded land with native tree species. A section of the project contains an experiment in high biodiversity reforestation in which rows of commercial trees are planted amongst regenerating natural vegetation. The project is subject to a long term biodiversity monitoring project led by a biologist from the University of Cambridge (UK) and staffed by local researchers.

More information on Restoration Forestry can be obtained on the project website: www.restauracaoflorestal.com.br

Employee Development and Benefits

Employees have the option to purchase furniture made from rejected wood from the production process. The company donates the wood, pays 50% of the price of the furniture, and loans the employee the other 50%.

Employees receive subsidized lunch and bus transport, support for a small loans program with the Bank of Brasil, and a line of credit with a local pharmacy.

Support for the company soccer teams, which have won three consecutive titles in the wood industry league.

Numerous training and educational programs are offered to employees, or subsidized by the company.
